Strength of Mind is now officially a provider of the Neurostar TMS system. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a treatment that has been in development for over 20 years and just approved by the FDA to be used in psychiatric practices two and a half years ago. What this means for us as providers is that we now have our first true direct neurophysiologic intervention for our patient practice. With TMS an MRI strength pulse is used over the left prefrontal cortex of the brain to treat resistant depression. The advantages are many, including no medication side effects. The patient is awake and alert for the full treatment, and results are known definitively in 4 to 6 weeks. |

With medications having been my primary mode of intervention for years, I like many psychiatrists have been “groomed” to a certain reality. As medications have numerous limitations I have been limited in how deeply to probe in trying to discover the actual level of function my patients were experiencing.
